At CellTech —operating out of the CellTech studio in Ballard, Seattle, Washington USA —our mission is to transform how curious learners experience the world by breaking down the walls between science, technology, and the arts. We offer highly focused, 2-hour creativity labs limited to just four students, ensuring an engaging, hands-on learning environment specifically designed for middle schoolers and above.
Created and led by Dr. Johannes Paul Johnson-Martinez (Dr. JJ), a polymathic educator and scientist, the CellTech curriculum is built on a unique foundation of industry and academic expertise. The programming is directly inspired by Dr. Johnson-Martinez’s four years of experience as an R&D Project Manager and Engineer at PepsiCo ( the largest food and beverage company in North America, and #2 globally) pioneering novel food chemistry techniques, combined with his internationally acclaimed PhD research at the University of Washington in Bioengineering and Data Science, where he focused on healthy aging, nutrition, and the gut microbiome.
We believe in learning by doing. In our studio, students do not just passively absorb concepts; they actively synthesize them. By seamlessly combining physical molecular sculpture, fine art still-life painting, computational coding in Python, and practical culinary food science all within a single session, we deliver dynamic, exciting educational content that empowers the next generation of multidisciplinary innovators.
Read more about Dr. JJ's internationally renowned research published in 2024 in Cell Reports Medicine, which generated over 200 worlwide news articles including CNN, BBC, the TODAY Show, and NBC News.
